about

Gerude, born and raised in Codó in the eastern part of Maranhão state, is the most emblematic figure of that particular small municipality and is a legend of Maranhão’s music scene. Grandson (on his father’s side) of a Syrian refugee from Damascus, and with Spanish and Portuguese grandparents as well, his parents were both born in Codó. Gerude himself began playing guitar and singing in bars at a young age, with a repertoire consisting of Brazilian music classics. His first independent 7” single was produced in 1983 featuring the frevo “Banda Do Baixo” which was a big hit and is still performed by local bands during Maranhão’s carnival.
The single was so successful that Gerude was encouraged to come up with an album’s worth of original songs by both himself and some of his local peers, and to set off for Rio to record his self-titled debut, another independent release which emerged in 1988. “Pungar” (Célia Leite-Jorge Thadeu) was a standout track but was never intended to be the LP’s title track.
Sessions for the album took place at Transamérica Studios in Rio. On the flight back up north to Maranhão Gerude ran into an old friend who at the time was working with legendary singer Alceu Valença. Using a Walkman, Gerude played his friend some of the tracks he had just recorded, and his friend reacted thusly: “Pungar is the best thing you have here. Have you picked the album title yet? If not, that should definitely be the title track.” He added that it wasn’t just because of the song’s rhythmic authority, its lyrics or how innovative it was, but because of what the name represented. Pungar is a dance with African roots and a fundamentally Afro-Brazilian cultural manifestation which involves dancing in a circle to singing and percussion, specifically the “Tambor De Crioula” which is the most prominent manifestation of popular culture in the state of Maranhão.

Sonar Kollektiv Berlin, Germany

Sonar Kollektiv was founded in 1997 by Jazzanova. Designed as a platform for own releases it soon attracted numerous new discoveries and like-minded musicians to lead their trumps right here. Still it was never the intention of SK to pursue one specific sound or provide an already existing scene. Each and every release on the label was meant to illustrate the musical taste of the collective. ... more
