about

This is the third 7” single released by this Rio native from the Méier neighborhood whose full name is Cosme Rodrigues Santos, better known as San Rodrigues. Despite the production credit given to José Reis on the label, the actual hands-on production was by veteran samba producer Bira Hawai. The maestro Ringo Moraes handled the arrangements and the record was released on the Recarey label owned by Chico Recarey, a Spaniard who was a big mover and shaker in the Rio nightlife, owning many popular clubs. Recarey was the founder of the popular Scala club in 1982, where San Rodrigues frequently filled in for the legendary Grande Otelo. “Fofa,” the single’s A-side, reached number 16 on Rio de Janeiro’s radio charts in the months following its release, leading San to appear on some of the country’s most popular TV shows.
San Rodrigues learned to play the drums from his father-in-law and that was the beginning of his career. Later on he joined the band Good Night Show as their drummer and eventually began to sing, later becoming the crooner of maestro Sérgio Norberto’s prestigious orchestra. With the support and backing of musician/producer Arthur Farias, San made monthly appearances on the TV Tupi network but after Farias’ passing his TV appearances became less frequent but San still pushed onwards, with a lot of support from TV icons Osmar Frazão and Wilton Franco.
It was via an invite from Frazão that San first traveled outside of Brazil for a short stay in the US where he performed in a few clubs. Months later, having returned to Brazil, he made his second international trip, this time to replace famed singer Jair Rodrigues in the group Bye Bye Brasil on their 1986 European tour. San decided to stay on in Rome after the tour and lived there until late 1994 before returning to Brazil, to the Taquara neighborhood in the Jacarepaguá area where he resides to this day.

Sonar Kollektiv Berlin, Germany

Sonar Kollektiv was founded in 1997 by Jazzanova. Designed as a platform for own releases it soon attracted numerous new discoveries and like-minded musicians to lead their trumps right here. Still it was never the intention of SK to pursue one specific sound or provide an already existing scene. Each and every release on the label was meant to illustrate the musical taste of the collective. ... more
