about

Bruno was born to a traditional cocoa-cultivating family in Itabuna in the south of Bahia state. The victories he experienced in assorted student festivals and competitions were for Bruno a rite of passage necessary to achieve an authenticity that he truly desired.
His debut album “Amor Natural” (1981), released when he was just 18, contained 100% original material with a bit of romanticism and a lot of experimentation. Two years later its title track received a new arrangement from famed Casa Das Máquinas guitarist Piska and was re-released on a single on the Opus label that was produced by Guto Graça Mello. The b-side “Como A Brisa”, arranged by Ricardo Feghali from the band Roupa Nova, was included on the soundtrack to TV Globo’s “Champagne” novel in 1983.
A frequent presence in Baixo Leblon, which was a known hangout for Rio’s musicians and artists in the 70s and 80s, Bruno made many friends and gained many admirers there, from employees of the local restaurants and bars all the way to the celebrities who could usually be found at these establishments. He was confident, well-spoken and spontaneous which was a real asset in his networking efforts.
One day in 1983, while stopped at a red light, he ran into an old friend from Salvador, Geo Benjamin from the band Mar Revolto. It was a pleasant surprise, and sheer kismet, as at that very moment Bruno had been looking for someone to help him round up musicians to form a band to back him. Geo had come to Rio to try to get a record deal and was ready to head back to Bahia and Bruno convinced him to stay. Bruno rented an apartment from Som Livre president João Araújo and he and Geo moved in as roommates.
One day, upon returning from the beach, Bruno found Geo in the living room and said “Geo, I just wrote some lyrics, let’s write a song right now!” Geo grabbed his guitar, Bruno began singing and amidst suggestions for chords and melodies, “Depois Da Praia” was written in less than 20 minutes.
The song was shelved for a few years until 1992 when Geo, who now had a studio in Rio’s Barra da Tijuca neighborhood, received a phone call from Bruno saying that he had gathered up a few tunes for a new album which he wanted to produce and release independently. Geo agreed immediately and that same month the sessions for the “Bruno 3” album began, to eventually be released on the Geo & Cia label.
Once the album was finished Bruno returned to Bahia to look after the family business after his mother passed away.
The sales and distribution of the album were done in partnership with singer/producer Djalma Oliveira, who at that time was the sales director of the large Pães Mendonça supermarket chain. He was a major booster of the Axé music genre in the 90s by buying large quantities of records directly from the distributors and selling them in the supermarket’s branches all over the country.

Sonar Kollektiv Berlin, Germany

Sonar Kollektiv was founded in 1997 by Jazzanova. Designed as a platform for own releases it soon attracted numerous new discoveries and like-minded musicians to lead their trumps right here. Still it was never the intention of SK to pursue one specific sound or provide an already existing scene. Each and every release on the label was meant to illustrate the musical taste of the collective. ... more
