about

Having already passed the 100th release mark is an impressive milestone in the rapidly expanding Sonar Kollektiv catalogue. With SK101 a record collector and DJs dream has come true for JAZZANOVA's ALEX BARCK who was looking for Hold On by NORMAN WEEKS for a very long time and so is now proud to be able to re-release this hotly saught after track on their Sonar Kollektiv label. This blinding funk disco tune was first brought to ALEX BARCK's attention by Vancouver based record connoisseur JASON LEV. ALEX was so taken by the tune that he had to have a copy. Record dealer and decknician JASON LEV, who is responsible for the excellent Sound Of Gold compilations wanted loads of cash for his original copy of Hold On. So ALEX had been searching for this record quite a while when he finally lucked upon a copy in a random hip-hop record store in Japan. As any digger of vinyl knows, its a beautiful moment when you discover a record that you've been after for months or maybe even years. The original song Hold On is uplifting feel-good disco funk. At 14 min 12 sec it is something of an epic; there's so many breaks on this massive song you will lose track. NORMAN WEEKS has produced this track to perfection. Its a quite unusual disco number with its lo-fi garage sound and string quartet. Despite the fact that this track was produced in the early eighties it has some pretty fresh modern sounding beats which would not be out of place in contemporary music like that of METRO AREA. Then, as if such a fourteen minute marathon wasn't enough, there's the brilliant Hold On [DIXON Edit] and another great NORMAN WEEKS original production, I Wanna Sing For You, on the B-side. DIXON being the man behind Sonar Kollektiv sub-label Innervisions and the acclaimed Berlin party series Inner City sure knows how to trim such a long track down to fit the dancefloor without losing any of the feeling of the original. I Wanna Sing For You is totally laid back lounge jazz. WEEKS vocal performance on this chilled out number is a treat, while relaxed melodies tinkle away on the fender rhodes. Hold On by NORMAN WEEKS is a perfect example of an unintentional hit. NORMAN WEEKS never set out to write a hit, but was just interested in having fun with his music. WEEKS doesn' t try too hard in his productions instead letting the music develop naturally at its own pace. The Hold On story has a happy ending 'cause ALEX BARCK and his fellow JAZZANOVA colleague STEFAN LEISERING even managed to get in touch with the NORMAN WEEKS through an internet chat-room. And so they were able to get permission to put the massive tune out on Sonar Kollektiv. And the Hold On even has a happy ending as NORMAN WEEKS is now working on brand new material using his advance for SK101. Now, thanks to Sonar Kollektiv, Hold On is once again available to the world.

about

Sonar Kollektiv Berlin, Germany

Sonar Kollektiv was founded in 1997 by Jazzanova. Designed as a platform for own releases it soon attracted numerous new discoveries and like-minded musicians to lead their trumps right here. Still it was never the intention of SK to pursue one specific sound or provide an already existing scene. Each and every release on the label was meant to illustrate the musical taste of the collective. ... more
